self guided walking holidays
how it works
INN-to-INN walking holidays allow you to walk from place to place through national parks, forests and local communities, progressing from one comfortable accommodation to the next. We’ve selected excellent walks and joined them together into great routes, occasionally incorporating sections of local transport.
What a sense of achievement it is to progress along a multi-day route, ticking off the miles along the way!
On these self-guided trips, you walk without a guide, following our walk notes and marked maps. No technical expertise is required so anyone who is active and in good health can do it. This is ideal for anyone who is hesitant about group travel or wants to travel with their own friends and set their own pace. It’s also great for those who are restricted to travelling at a particular time as you can choose your own departure date.
INN-to-INN walking holidays are similar to European “hotel treks” or “pub to pub” trips. You walk from place to place along a linear or circular route staying in comfortable accommodation along the way. You only need to carry a light day pack each day as the rest of your luggage will be moved for you by vehicle whilst you are out walking. These holidays can all be done self-guided, using our easy-to-follow walk notes and marked maps. Some can also be done with a guide.
how many people do we need?
You need to form your own group of two or more people and then you can choose your own starting date. If you are travelling alone we can still assist you.
we move your luggage ahead
You only need to carry a day pack, as your main luggage will be moved ahead to your next accommodation while you are enjoying the walk. You’ll arrive more refreshed. All you need carry is a day pack with your picnic lunch, water, camera, a jacket etc. This is one of the special features of an Auswalk INN-to-INN walking holiday.
Stay in comfort
All of the accommodation is booked in advance for you. At the end of a day on the track, you’ll enjoy our hand-selected properties. You may stay in a B&B, ecolodge, country cottage, motel, seaside resort or alpine ski lodge. You can expect a private room with ensuite bathroom (unless otherwise indicated on the trip page). See our accommodation and dining page for more info.
We’ll support you along the way
We’ll arrange everything for you – the accommodations, meals, luggage transfers, local transport etc. All you have to do is form your own group of two or more people and walk.
Go self-guided for independence
Self-Guided walking offers great flexibility. You can discover an area at your own pace, stopping and starting as you wish. You walk with your own companions (a minimum of two people booking together is required). Most importantly, you choose your own starting date. Once confirmed, we won’t cancel the booking, so you can book in the sure knowledge that your walking holiday will operate.
Finding the way is easy
Self-Guided walking holidays are fully supported. You walk independently, without a guide, following our detailed walk notes. Many people find navigating in the bush a difficult task, but on an Auswalk, it is easy to find your way. We supply you with easy-to-follow walk notes that guide you from point to point. They are regularly updated and have been tried and tested over the years.
what are the walk notes like?
Auswalk’s easy-to-follow walk notes will guide you from point to point along the way. We use large print so they are easy to read. They include clear directions on how to find your way along the walking route, and how to get to your accommodation. The notes also provide lots of interesting and valuable information about the natural environment you are passing through, average walking times, distances for each section, optional side-trips and many interesting things en route. A typical set of walk notes includes 30-50 pages of information for you. They are provided in a folder that allows you to take out the pages relevant for the day, so you don’t have to carry the entire booklet with you. The pages fit neatly into a souvenir waterproof map case which is yours to keep. Have a look at a sample page of walk notes.
How accurate are the notes?
We regularly check our walking routes and receive regular feedback from auswalkers. Your walk notes are printed one month prior to your trip especially for you, ensuring that they are as up-to-date as possible. They have been tried and tested over many years.
What else is in the info pack?
There will be a marked map/s showing the walking route and location of each accommodation. There will be informative booklets on the flora, fauna, geology or history of the area. There’s also a waterproof map case, luggage tags and insulated lunch bags.
What about maps?
You do not need to be able to read a map. We do provide marked maps, but most people find the walk notes are adequate on their own.
What if we get lost?
It is extremely unlikely that you’ll become lost if you have Auswalk’s walk notes. Your luggage has been moved ahead of you to the next accommodation so they will be expecting you. The hosts know our walking route and have an action plan in place if you don’t arrive.
You can have a guide if you prefer
Some INN-to-INN walks can also be done guided.
solo travellers – we can assist
INN-to-INN trips need you to form your own group of two or more people. If you’re travelling alone and want to do an INN-to-INN trip, try our “Find a Walking Companion Service“. Alternatively, we can arrange a privately guided trip for you or you can join one of our group guided walking holidays.
What about families?
Families with children are most welcome on these trips. We often say “a family that walks together talks together”. For more details see our families page.
what about a groups of friends?
Most of these trips can cater for groups. Some are restricted to small numbers due to limited rooms at the accommodations. Talk to us for more info.
How do we get to the start?
All start and finish points of our walking holidays can be reached by daily public transport. If you arrive by private car you can leave it at the first accommodation (note that at some properties your car will need to be parked out on the street near the accommodation).
When can we start?
You may choose your own starting date (some trips are seasonal). As there are many components for us to arrange, it is best to book well in advance to ensure your choice of dates is available. Providing us with a second choice is helpful.
