Hiking near Katoomba and the Three Sisters
enjoy the three sisters walk on your blue mountains walking holiday
The Blue Mountains are well known for the Three Sisters rock formation near Katoomba. There are several Aboriginal legends to explain the formation of the 3 Sisters. This is our favourite: There were three very beautiful maidens who belonged to the Katoomba tribe – Weemala, Meeni & Gunedoo. Word of their beauty spread and other tribes became jealous. Tribal laws prohibited the three sisters from marrying outside their own tribe. One day three brothers from the Nepean tribe decided to claim the maidens. A terrible battle raged across the mountains – blood flowed and stained the ground red, colouring the cliffs around. The Katoomba tribe were losing the battle and the maidens were terrified. They ran to the cliff edge and saw the fierce fighting. Their father, who was also the witch doctor of the tribe, cast a magic spell on them to turn them into stone where they stood. He planned to change them back after the battle, however he was killed when he went back into the battle. The Nepean tribe won and went to claim the maidens, only to find three great pinnacles of rock - the famous 3 Sisters.
To this day no one has discovered the magic spell which will set them free. If you find out whilst doing the Three Sisters Walk, the local tourism authority doesn’t want to know about it or else they won’t get the 1.5 million people each year who come to see the 3 Sisters!!!
