Australia’s South West is a group guided trip. We use lots of superlatives in our walks descriptions, but those are never better deserved than for this itinerary. This area offers walkers a tremendous variety of terrain including forests, coast, granite hills and mountain ranges.

Heading south from Perth, our first stop is the tall karri forests of the Pemberton area. These giants tower overhead, as do the unique tingle trees (most people have never heard of these monsters) that you’ll see on the Tree Tops Walk. Several trees are still used as fire lookout towers, including Gloucester Tree. Will you be brave enough to climb to the fire lookout at the top?

The 1000km long Bibbulmun Track passes through this area en route to Albany. We’ve selected several of the best sections for this walk. Apart from the Pemberton forests, our favourites are the coastal stretches near Walpole, Denmark and Albany. Idyllic coves beg for deckchair and champagne, while rugged cliff lines need you to hang onto hats and crawl to the edges……and the Blowhole!

After the giddy thrills of the coast, our next walking is inland at the Porongorups. Tracks wind along granite ridges to the highest tors, excellent view points towards Albany and stunning Stirling Ranges. A steep ladder allows access to another hatholding place on the very top of Castle Rock.

The Stirling Ranges are a fitting finale with an ascent of Bluff Knoll a must for peak-baggers; it’s the highest mountain in the Stirlings. From the summit you can see the extent of the range in both directions.

We’ve chosen spring for this tour, to co-incide with beautiful wildflower displays. All colours of the rainbow are represented and we guarantee camera shutters will be working overtime. Naturally you should enjoy our beaut accommodations en route.

NOTE: This trip can easily be combined with our Cape to Cape group guided trip for an extended Western Australia walking vacation.

Grading

The sections of Bibbulmun Track vary from easy to moderate. The bush walking in the Porongorups is moderate and the Stirling Ranges offer some challenging walking. This trip operates with two guides so we can offer easier and harder walk options along the way. For more detailed information including daily walk distances and times please see our Fact Sheet.

The final two nights will be at a very atmospheric lodge near the Stirling Ranges - this place is a real treat.

Itinerary

Day 1

Starts in Perth at 9am. Travel south to Pemberton, heartland of the South West forest region. Climb the fire lookout tree called the Gloucester Tree, followed by a 2 hr forest walk to the Cascades. Great opportunity for swimming in the lake. Accommodation: Karri Valley

Day 2

Hike more of Bibbulmun Track from Pemberton to Karri Valley Resort. There is up to 20km of walking, through tall forests, round a lake and a waterfall to enjoy along the way. At Beedelup Falls, a high suspension bridge crosses Beedelup Brook, giving a birds-eye view down into the deep creek gully. Accommodation: Karri Valley (near Pemberton)

Day 3

A day of walking in quiet forests. Early morning lake circuit walk. followed by hiking in the karri forests of Warren National Park. The Warren River is large enough to attract many canoeists each year. Next is a short walk amongst the granite outcrops in Shannon National Park en route to the coastal town of Walpole. Accommodation: Walpole

Day 4

See rare Tingle trees in the Valley of the Giants and do the Tree Tops Walk, the original Australian tree tops experience. Travel further south to a fabulous coastal section of the Bibbulmum Track, from Conspicuous Cliffs to Peaceful Bay through Walpole-Nornalup National Park. This is wind in the hair walking. Accommodation: Denmark

Day 5

Continue yesterday's coastal hike on the Bibbulmun Track, finishing in Denmark. The track hugs the sea cliffs for much of the way, providing stunning panoramas of small islands, lakes, and inlets. There are many sand-dunes brimming with wildflowers as well as areas of sheltered coastal vegetation. Foul Bay is definitely mis-named! Accommodation: Denmark

Day 6

Today you'll enjoy wilderness hiking to Bald Head in the Torndirrup National Park, near Albany. The day concludes with a photographic stop at The Gap and Natural Bridge, two of the most impressive pieces of coast you are ever likely to see. Accommodation: Albany

Day 7

Inland to the Porongorups where the walking is amongst huge granite tors, with names like Balancing Rock, Devil's Slide and Gibraltar Rock. This range is supposed to be the oldest in the world at 1000 million years! We'll do the Nancy Peak circuit and climb to the top of Castle Rock, before enjoying a late afternoon winery visit. Accommodation: Stirling Ranges

Day 8

Challenging climb up 1095m Bluff Knoll for a sweeping 360 degree vista of the entire Stirling Ranges. Unlike most other walks on this itinerary, you'll brush shoulders with many people on this trek to the highest mountain in southern WA. The 65km of the range bristles with sharp peaks, sheltered valleys and wildflowers all year. An easier option of a wildflower ramble will also be offered. Accommodation: Stirling Ranges

Day 9

A welcome rest day travelling back to Perth through the rural towns of Kojanup and William. Arrive in Perth at around 3.00pm.

Testimonials

Dianne Aylward, September 2011 - NSW
Once again I had two wonderful holidays and yes I have great memories of fantastic walking, interesting people, quality accommodation and amazing food. The two guides, Marie and Adrian were fantastic. I would especially like to thank you so much for my ‘11th trip free’ experience and as there were 3 of us doing our free trips, it just goes to show that what you do at Auswalk is really special. Everyone was interested to hear about all our other trips and I’m sure it has inspired many of them to book more trips with you. Thank you once again.
