Auswalk’s Gold Coast Hinterland Walk is a self guided INN-to-INN walking holiday. You walk through the National Park from one delightful accommodation to the next. We move your luggage while you are out walking.
One of Australia’s newest long distance walking tracks, the Gold Coast Hinterland Walk connects Lamington and Springbrook Plateaus together. Your first walking on this holiday is in the magnificent rainforest of Lamington National Park, with shorter walks to start with, near the famous O’Reillys accommodation.
This is a World Heritage Area where new plants are being found, classified and named even today. Massive strangler figs, ancient Antarctic beech, red cedar, rosewood and booyongs tower overhead whilst hundreds of different species of palms, vines, ferns and orchids flourish beneath. Have you ever hugged a 3000 year old tree? These ancient Antarctic Beech trees (Nothofagus moorei) are evidence of Australia’s beginnings as part of the Gondwanaland super-continent.
More than 160 species of sub-tropical birds provide entertainment for everyone. The striking black and yellow regent bower bird is always a favourite. Don’t miss the early morning guided bird walk for surprise sightings up close. Red-necked pademelons, possums and sugar gliders are commonly seen around the lodges in the evenings. Peaks here reach over 1100m and there is a fairly high rainfall to keep the numerous rivers flowing year-round. Though optional, climbing the huge strangler fig tower and doing the Treetops Walk are easy and exciting.
The walking highlight for many will be following the Border track across the the McPherson Range, but there is much more up here. We think the Springbrook plateau is every bit as impressive, where the rainforest is punctuated by numerous cascading streams and towering waterfalls. The tracks criss-cross lots of charming creeks and many waterfalls can be viewed from delightful lunch spots. This new Auswalk is a real gem and is great for lovers of rainforests, waterfalls and bird life.
